Not sure about your plans for New Year's? Why not spend the night at First Night Raleigh? This event is the city's annual New Year's celebration, and it's one of the biggest end-of-year gatherings in North Carolina. Hundreds of people come from all over the area near our homes for sale in Raleigh to attend! 

With such big crowds, you'll want to plan ahead for your visit. Here's everything you need to know about First Night Raleigh and what to expect while you're there. 

About the Event

First Night Raleigh takes place on December 31st, starting at 2 PM in the area around City Plaza and Fayetteville Street. The event is suitable for all ages and features an early New Year's countdown at 7 PM so the youngest attendees can still enjoy the fun before bed. Later on, Raleigh residents gather in the middle of the City Plaza to watch the annual Acorn Drop and fireworks display at the stroke of midnight. 

Music and Shows to Ring in the New Year

First Night's all-day concert series has always been one of the major attractions of the events. Starting at 2 PM and running all the way up to the last few minutes before midnight, attendees can enjoy performances from acclaimed local musicians like Zoe & Cloyd, Zoo Crew, and the Gregg Gelb Jazz Quartet. There's a huge range of musical styles on display in each year's lineup, so keep an ear out for your favorite tunes!

The event also hosts shows and exhibitions by local dance troupes, marching bands, and even stand-up comedians and fire performers. Each show takes place at a specific time in a different area of the event venue. Be sure to check the event schedule beforehand, so you know when and where to catch the groups you're most interested in. 

If you have some time to kill in between other activities, you can also check out some of the immersive art projection shows that are on display. These shows are held both indoors and outdoors and are active all night, giving you plenty of time to stop by and enjoy them at your leisure.  

Fun For All Ages

First Night Raleigh has plenty of activities to keep you busy too. You'll love taking a spin on amusement park rides like the Ferris Wheel and the Gravitron, a high-intensity spinning flat ride that's sure to please Raleigh's thrill-seekers. You can also spend some time gliding through the flashing lights of the event's disco roller rink or take a ride in one of the old-fashioned horse-drawn sleighs parading around the event space.

If you plan on bringing kids with you, you can take them to the Children's Celebration event area for special activities aimed at the younger crowd. These include arts and crafts, educational demonstrations, and a separate lineup of child-friendly performances. This area is only open until the early countdown at 7 PM, so make sure you head out in time if your kids want to participate.

  A big part of the fun at a New Year's party is counting down the minutes until the clock strikes 12! Try doing this with your own countdown clock. Buy a big dry-erase board, and hang it on one wall. Draw a large, circular clock on the board. As the night goes on, erase and re-draw the hands to represent the current time. Consider also putting a big "gong" next to the clock. You can strike it each time you change the clock, calling your guests' attention to the activity.

  A hot chocolate bar is a fun, festive treat that guests of all ages can enjoy. Along with the hot chocolate, you can prepare a buffet of fun toppings.   In some families and traditions, it is typical to open poppers as the clock strikes 12. In other traditions, lighting off sparklers is typical. In either case, make sure you stock up on sparklers or poppers, so everyone has their noise-making, flashy item of choice to ring in the new year. If you choose sparklers, do make sure your guests know to go outside and light them.

About the Piedmont Wildlife Center

Founded in 2003 by veterinarian Bobby Schopler, the Piedmont Wildlife Center was born out of the need for a wildlife hospital in the Raleigh-Durham area. Over the years, its mission has shifted from being a treatment facility for injured wildlife to becoming a center for education and conservation. 

The Piedmont Wildlife Center is dedicated to building connections between people and nature through a combination of outdoor education, citizen science, and wildlife stewardship. To that end, it has created a wide range of educational programming for all ages. 

Resident Animals at the Piedmont Wildlife Center

A variety of animals call the Piedmont Wildlife Center home. Although the center is not currently set up to accept, treat and rehabilitate orphaned or injured wildlife, quite a few creatures have found their way here and become Ambassador Animals. 

These animals, which include box turtles, snakes, rabbits, and possums, were either rescued or surrendered by previous owners. The PWC is also home to several raptors, including Bella the great horned owl, Willow the red-shouldered hawk, and Edgar the raven, which were rehabilitated after sustaining injuries that would have made them unable to survive in the wild. 

Visiting the Piedmont Wildlife Center

While the Piedmont Wildlife Center is not a zoo in the traditional sense, there are ample opportunities to visit the center and see some of the animals that reside here. The PWC is located within the historic Leigh Farm Park in Durham, NC, which is a public park that is open to anyone. 

In particular, you can come to the Piedmont Wildlife Center and see the raptors in their outdoor enclosures any time during park hours. However, the cabin that houses many of the smaller ambassador animals is not currently open to the public. 

Programs, Camps & Tours

For a more in-depth experience at the Piedmont Wildlife Center, the best option is to book a guided tour. Tours are available for small groups, including family, friend groups, class outings, and retreats.

One of the most popular tour experiences is the On the Fly Tour, which offers a meet-and-greet with each of the seven species that reside in the raptor enclosure. Many visitors also enjoy the Turtle Trek, which includes a walk in the woods and an opportunity to assist researchers in their box turtle research project before meeting one of the resident box turtles at the PWC. 

The center also offers a wide range of educational animal programs for kids, including at-school programs, field trips, class tours, and birthday parties. For a truly immersive experience, the PWC also offers kids' camps that range from day-long Wild for a Day camps to full week-long camp adventures in various seasons.

  If you swing by the North Carolina Museum of Art to take in one of its world-class exhibits, the natural next step is William B. Umstead State Park. The path is only 2.3 miles – you'll spend about two-thirds going downhill before a brief uphill jaunt. Umstead itself welcomes cyclists with open arms, providing some 13 miles of trails, especially for off-road enthusiasts. A mountain bike is not required.
  
  
• Old Reedy Trailhead to Bond Park
  Getting a start from Umstead State Park will put you in a prime position for cycling adventures courtesy of the Town of Cary, which sponsors this particular leg of the trek. You might see your way into a beloved swath of Lake Crabtree County Park and through to Cary's own Black Creek Greenway. Passing through quiet neighborhoods, it is mostly flat except for the challenging hill you'll encounter at mile 15.
  
  
• Bond Park to the American Tobacco Trail
  If you're spending a weekend looking at homes for sale in Cary, you can also hop on the East Coast Greenway from here, heading west through the White Oak Creek area. • American Tobacco Trail to Durham
  Following the path of an abandoned rail corridor of the historic Norfolk Southern Railroad, the American Tobacco Trail encompasses more than 22 miles of trails and terminates in Durham proper. It opened in sections, beginning its story in downtown Durham in 2001. In 2014, a bridge over the interstate in Durham inaugurated the complete trail for the first time, and it's been a local favorite ever since.

October is in full swing, meaning it's time to make your Halloween plans. If your evening includes a trick-or-treating session, our real estate agents suggest following these guidelines to ensure that all your little ghosts and goblins remain safe:

1. Opt for Flame-Retardant Materials
   When choosing or making a Halloween costume, look for flame-retardant materials. Some people like to use a real candle in their jack-o-lanterns, and it's common for festive individuals to light a few candles to fill their homes with a seasonal aroma. If a child accidentally brushes against an open flame, a flame-retardant costume will decrease the chance of injury and prevent the flame from spreading. 

2. Check That Costumes Fit Well
   Your child's costume should be comfortable and allow them to freely move around. See that pants, skirts, and robes are hemmed to the appropriate length so that they don't accidentally trip over them. If the costume includes a mask, make sure that the eye holes are positioned in the correct location and don't obscure their vision. Any accessories, like a broom or sword, should be small enough for the child to carry without dragging them on the ground. 

3. Go Over Trick-or-Treat Etiquette
   Even if they've gone trick-or-treating numerous times, make sure kids remember the proper etiquette. Remind kids to only go to homes with the lights turned on. Encourage them to stay on designated walkways and avoid walking through the homeowner's grass or flower beds. A "please" and a "thank you" are fantastic ways for kids to show appreciation to neighbors handing out treats. 

4. Check That Kids Have a Light Source With Them
   With so many kids out and about and adults and older teens heading to Halloween parties or haunted houses, it's essential for anyone walking at night to be well-illuminated. See if you can incorporate glow sticks or reflective tape into your child's costume. Or, add a few strips of reflective tape to their costume to ensure drivers can see them. In a pinch, a flashlight is an easy addition to keeping children illuminated. Make sure that the batteries in the flashlight are new so that it lasts the whole evening!

5. Convey Your Expectations
   If you have older kids who want to go on their own, convey your expectations before they set out. Go over a pre-approved route. Remind them to stay in a group with other children, and see that they have a cellphone on them in case of an emergency. Let your kids know when you expect them home, and make sure they know not to enter any homes. 

6. Hold Off on Enjoying Any Treats
   Kids should avoid digging into their bag of candy until the night is over for multiple reasons. It's a smart idea to go through their candy at the end of the night and remove anything that's come open or appears to have been tampered with. Check that all of their candy is suitable for their dietary needs. Small candy is a choking risk for small kids, and even older kids can inadvertently swallow candy when they're walking. 

7. Stow Electronic Devices
   Keep any electronics (like tablets and mobile phones) stowed until the evening is over. This prevents the device from becoming a distraction while kids are trick-or-treating.

About Raleigh's Oldest Home

The Joel Lane Museum House was built in 1769, making it the oldest home in Raleigh and even older than our country. Built by Colonel Joel Lane – who is known as both the Father of Wake County and Raleigh – the house is now a museum that's a Raleigh Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  
In 1771, he introduced legislation to found Wake County, and the Colonial Assembly approved it. Lane's home was the site where the decision was made in 1792 to buy a 1,000-acre parcel of his land for the state's new capital city of Raleigh.

The museum lets you hear the stories of the people who lived during the colonial era, the Revolutionary War, and the early years of a new nation. Costumed guides tell accurate stories and create a personalized tour for each group of guests. 
  
The house itself has been restored to its appearance in the 1793-94 era. You'll also see a building called the Kitchen, which was moved from northern Wake County in 1979. It was a middle-class house built around 1790 but is similar in design to a colonial kitchen. In addition, the visitors center – which houses the gift shop and offices – is also on the property. It was built around 1840 as an addition to the Lane home but was removed from the original home when it was restored. 
  
What to Know Before You Go

Tours resumed for the Joel Lane Museum House in June, giving North Carolina residents a chance to learn about the Revolutionary War and the early days of the Raleigh area.

The Joel Lane Museum House is located at the corner of South St. Mary's and West Hargett Streets in Raleigh. To take a tour, go to the visitors' center at 160 South St. Mary's Street. Parking is free and can be found on St. Mary's Street in front of the visitors' center and on Hargett Street in front of the museum house.

Admission to the museum is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors age 65 and over, $4 for students kindergarten through college with ID, and free for children under 6 as well as Blue Star Families.

Draw a face with a black Sharpie marker, and you've got an adorable leprechaun to help you celebrate St. Patrick's Day! 

2. 3-D Shamrock
   Want to make a shamrock that pops? Try this fun 3-D paper shamrock. Start by cutting green construction paper into six hearts that are the same size and a piece in the shape of a shamrock stem. Fold each heart in half vertically, making a strong crease. Glue the stem at the bottom of the page and the bottom four hearts over the stem, directly across from each other. Now use the last two hearts to make the top of the shamrock, and you're done! This is a great way to make a 3-D card that your child can give to a loved one.

3. Leprechaun Handprint Craft
   Handprint crafts create a memorable keepsake you can treasure for years. To make this fun handprint leprechaun, start by painting your child's fingers orange and the palm a skin color. Then, have them press their hand hard on a piece of white paper. For this craft, the fingers will point down, as they will make the beard. Use paint, markers, or construction paper to make a tophat and add some orange paint underneath to look like hair. Finally, add some googly eyes and draw a nose and mouth -- and you've got a happy leprechaun to celebrate the day with you. 

4. Rainbow Chain Necklace
   Kids love crafts they can wear, so this rainbow chain necklace is always a big hit! It's easy to make and will keep them busy for a while. All you need is colored construction paper, tape or a stapler, and some gold glitter. Start by cutting red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple paper into small strips. Then, show your child how to make each piece into a circle, interlocking them together. Hold each piece together with a staple or a dot of glue. Finally, make a pot of gold with construction paper and your gold glitter. Staple or glue it to the front of the wreath, and it's ready to go. 

5. Fabric Wreath
   If you have an older child or you're willing to help, this DIY fabric wreath is another fun project. Start with a 12-inch wire wreath frame and 1 yard each of lime green, polka dot, and shamrock-patterned fabric. Cut the fabric into 1.5 x 7-inch strips. Then tie each piece of fabric to the frame, one at a time, creating a pattern. Start from the outside edge and work your way in. When you're done, hang it on your door with a piece of green ribbon.

In the post-Civil War era, Oakwood was created as a rural neighborhood that was quite a hike into town. Today, it's essentially in Raleigh's downtown. However, many of the area's Victorian-style homes still look how they did back then. 

Although the homes were neglected for some time, the area underwent a restoration in the 1970s. It became Raleigh's first designated historic district in 1947. Today it's one of the area's loveliest neighborhoods. 

Five Points Neighborhoods 

Another interesting and eclectic area, the Five Points Neighborhoods, is a short drive from downtown, conveniently located near the interstate, and is well-known for its block of great restaurants and bars. 

It was developed in the 1920s as a series of planned communities designed to give residents a break from the hectic urban life. The Five Points area comprises several neighborhoods, including Vanguard Park, Bloomsbury, Roanoke Park, and Hayes Barton, which was once considered one of the area's most desirable neighborhoods.

The 0.8-mile provides views of the preserve's bluffs, streams, and namesake hemlock trees. Continue on the 1.2-mile Chestnut Oak Look for an extended hike. 
   
   
4. Art to Heart Trail
   A great option if you're looking for a leisurely hike without leaving the city, this trail stretches 5.9 miles from the North Carolina Museum of Art to downtown Raleigh. The Art to Heart Trail explores some of the most picturesque green spaces in the Raleigh, including the museum's beautiful 164-acre park, the campus of North Carolina State University, and Pullen Park. 
   
   
5. Frances L. Liles Trail (Carl Alwin Schenck Memorial Forest)
   Just 10 minutes from the NC State Campus, Carl Alwin Schenck Memorial Forest spans 245 shady, secluded acres, including several well-maintained trails. The Frances L Liles Trail is the most popular route in the park. Just over a mile in length, it's an excellent trail for bird watching and offers a chance to see some of the area's unique plant life. 
   
   
6. Cole Mill Trail (Eno River State Park)
   This Durham, NC trail offers a mile-long ramble along the banks of the Eno River in Eno River State Park. Keep an eye out for the scenic laurel-covered bluffs along the river (visit in mid to late April to see the laurel in full bloom) and check out the nearby remnants of the old Cabe Mill. Connections are available to several other trails, including the 1.65-mile Bobbitt Hole Loop.

   The crown jewel of Raleigh's urban hiking trails, the Falls Lake Trail stretches 60 miles. 8. UNC Science Expo: Chapel Hill, April 14
   The UNC Science Expo is a fun-filled day that draws close to 10,000 participants. Kids and adults will both love the lab tours, science challenges, and over 100 hands-on activity booths. This free event is held on April 14th from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and does not require pre-registration. 9. Plastic-Free Eggstravaganza: Chapel Hill, April 14

   The rugged Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is one of the great places in the Triangle to get away from it all. Admission to the event is free, and parking is available nearby at the Main District Garage.
